Reminiscing the Past

Comments : Hey, I am a Maripipian too!
July 17, 2007

...you might consider me as  an intruder, but I am not.

I was born in Binalayan in 1957. My mother Versing was from Ol-og. Though I don't live there anymore I still consider the island my home because my roots are still there; my mom's sisters: Tiya Estring Casio Sermo, Tiya Naida and the late OIC Troadio Casio and my favorite tatay Waway
Casio.  They were actually pretty famous that time because Tatay Adiong and Tatay  Waway
owned a passenger boat  that traveled to Lucena from the island. Also just to say the least Lola Inez have told us that surnames such as the Aguilars, Mondoys, Bonifacios, the Manuels, Radams, Garcias, Caingcoys, Gervacios etc. are our relatives. So I guess I really am a Maripipian too.

My memories of Maripipi are still vivid in my mind. My family used to live in the house where Tatay Julian Garcia lives  now. My father sold it to him when we left to Tacloban to live. I think I was only five years old that time. Occassionally my family would go back to the island for summer vacations and everytime we were in Ol-og I'd make sure to come by  to our old house and I would asked tatay Julian  for a glass of water para la ako makasakob san balay. My tatay was an "alpor". I can still remember the  "bulad  in kapings" on the main street of Binalayan ngadto sa artesian adjacent to Kuya, the intsik.  It's a funny feeling to say, but I  honestly always feel` "big and untouchable" in the island for when I am home to visit, tatay Waway would yell his usual phrases to other teenagers,"kalamrihon kamo mga umangkon ko baya ito - mga original  nga taga Maripipi!" But of course as many people knew  Tatay Waway was a peace loving person with a big heart and was very respectable so kids would listen to him.

I still remember apoy Iyay; Kon may nagpapagba we used to play "korokabayo", which was made of banana stalk. Unfortunately I forgotten the names of my playmates already, whom we played with when we were still very young. I learned how to swim in the ocean of Binalayan using the famous gabayan "angol na lubi." I also remember the big "footprint" on the rock towards the cemetery - You can ask the old folks if you want to see it - the crystal clear water of Sambawan is always unforgettable, an tubig sa Viga and the "pongtud" sa Sambawan. I also remember the times when I liked touching the engraved name of my lolo Juan Casio Sr. the 1st councilor of Maripipi during his time (ada  sa tangke sa tubig sa Bungto).

Visiting the Maripipi island  for me was just like visiting the Disneyland when the schoolyear ends. I had so much fun and I always looked forward to it.  These are just few of what I can relate to you about my precious memories on the island.

I am visiting the island this year to attend the fiesta in Bungto. I already informed my lovely cousins, Susan and Sonia. Besides fiesta in Bungto is also my Inay's birthday. So, I am so proud to say I am a Maripipian and my heart will always be there.

I hope to see everyone.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            Comments:
